Việc thành lập TP Phú Quốc là nhằm thiết lập mô hình quản lý chính quyền đô thị, thu hút đầu tư, khơi dậy tiềm năng du lịch, tạo đà phát triển kinh tế – xã hội…

Chính phủ vừa hoàn thiện dự thảo trình Ủy ban Thường vụ Quốc hội về việc thành lập TP Phú Quốc (Kiên Giang) và các phường thuộc TP này.

Theo đó, sau khi xem xét tờ trình của UBND tỉnh Kiên Giang, Chính phủ nhận thấy Phú Quốc nằm trên vùng biển Tây Nam của Tổ quốc, tiếp giáp với các nước Campuchia, Thái Lan và Malaysia. Huyện Phú Quốc được mệnh danh là đảo ngọc – thiên đường du lịch với những bãi biển còn nguyên sơ, được bao phủ bởi bờ biển dài với nhiều bãi biển đẹp nổi tiếng.

Với vị thế đặc biệt, Phú Quốc còn có các ngư trường khá giàu tiềm năng, vùng biển nước sâu tạo điều kiện phát triển hệ thống cảng biển để tàu lớn có thể neo đậu. Vì vậy, Phú Quốc luôn là điểm đến lý tưởng của du khách trong và ngoài nước.

Năm 2018, Phú Quốc đón 2,55 triệu lượt khách du lịch, năm 2019 đạt hơn 3 triệu lượt, chiếm khoảng 60% lượng khách du lịch của tỉnh Kiên Giang. Kinh tế phát triển đã tạo thu nhập ổn định cho người dân trên địa bàn, góp phần làm giảm tỉ lệ hộ nghèo từ 0,93% năm 2017 xuống còn 0,65% năm 2019.

Sự phát triển mạnh mẽ, toàn diện của Phú Quốc đã tạo động lực thúc đẩy cho sự phát triển của tỉnh Kiên Giang trong thời gian qua. Tuy nhiên, Phú Quốc vẫn thực hiện nhiệm vụ quản lý hành chính nhà nước theo mô hình chính quyền nông thôn, dẫn đến bộ máy chính quyền hiện nay không đủ khả năng đáp ứng yêu cầu quản lý trong tình hình mới với nhiều vấn đề bất cập.

Vì vậy, Chính phủ đề xuất thành lập TP Phú Quốc trên cơ sở toàn bộ 589,27 km2 diện tích tự nhiên và quy mô dân số 179.480 người của huyện Phú Quốc.

Cạnh đó, Chính phủ đề xuất thành lập hai phường gồm phường Dương Đông và phường An Thới trên cơ sở nhập xã Hòn Thơm và thị trấn An Thới.

Sau khi thành lập TP Phú Quốc và các phường, TP Phú Quốc có chín đơn vị hành chính cấp xã gồm phường Dương Đông, phường An Thới và bảy xã gồm Hàm Ninh, Dương Tơ, Gành Dầu, Bãi Thơm, Cửa Dương, Cửa Cạn, Thổ Châu.
