Bill Gates và vợ Melinda hôm 3/5 tuyên bố ly hôn sau 27 năm chung sống. Đồng sáng lập Microsoft hiện là người giàu thứ 4 thế giới, với tài sản 130,5 tỷ USD, theo Forbes. Ông cũng là một trong 8 người sở hữu 100 tỷ USD trên thế giới.
Hiện chưa rõ vợ chồng tỷ phú có thỏa thuận phân chia khối tài sản khổng lồ này từ trước đó hay không. Năm 1997, New York Times cho biết thỏa thuận này có tồn tại. Còn nếu không, vì cả hai sống tại Washington, mọi tài sản có được sau khi kết hôn đều được coi là tài sản chung và sẽ phải chia đều khi ly hôn nếu hai bên không thể thống nhất.

130 tỷ USD của Gates chủ yếu đến từ đầu tư vào cổ phiếu và nhiều loại tài sản khác. Ông có một quỹ đầu tư trị giá 1 tỷ USD có tên Breakthrough Energy cùng khoảng 20 quỹ khác.
Tuy có khối tài sản lớn, Gates từng nói với người dẫn chương trình nổi tiếng Ellen DeGeneres rằng khi trở thành tỷ phú trẻ nhất thế giới năm 31 tuổi, ông không tiêu xài hoang phí.
Dù vậy, thi thoảng ông cũng tiêu khá phóng tay. Bill Gates được cho là sở hữu một chiếc Bombardier BD-700 Global Express với 19 chỗ ngồi, trị giá 40 triệu USD.

Ông cũng chi nhiều tiền cho căn nhà Xanadu 2.0 tại Medina, Washington. Ông mua mảnh đất giá 2 triệu USD này năm 1988. Sau đó, ông mất 7 năm và tốn 63 triệu USD để xây dựng căn nhà. Biệt thự có một phòng chơi trampoline và được trang bị số màn hình máy tính trị giá 80.000 USD.
Biệt thự được trang trí nhiều tác phẩm nghệ thuật đắt giá, trong đó có bức tranh Winslow Homer được Gates mua giá 36 triệu USD năm 1988.

Gates còn nhập khẩu cát từ St. Lucia vùng Caribbean để đổ quanh nhà làm bãi tắm. Toàn bộ khu biệt thự có 6 nhà bếp, 24 phòng tắm, một rạp phim 20 chỗ và nhà xe sức chứa 23 ôtô.
Gates cho biết khoản chi xa xỉ đầu tiên của ông sau khi thành lập Microsoft là một chiếc siêu xe Porsche 911. Ông sau đó bán nó. Chiếc xe được đấu giá, thu về 80.000 USD. Dĩ nhiên, đây không phải chiếc Porsche cuối cùng của tỷ phú. Ông còn có một chiếc Porsche 959 trong bộ sưu tập xe của mình.

Gates có một trang trại hơn 1,8 ha tại Wellington, Florida. Trong khuôn viên là một căn biệt thự rộng 1.200 m2. Ông bỏ ra 27 triệu USD mua nơi này vì con gái Jennifer thích đua ngựa.
Tại Rancho Paseana, California, ông sở hữu một trang trại rộng đến 92 ha, mua với giá 18 triệu USD, gồm một đường đua, một vườn cây và năm nhà kho. Ở bang Wyoming, ông còn có trang trại khác rộng hơn, gần 200 ha, được mua với giá 8,9 triệu USD vào năm 2009.

Bill Gates còn có nhiều khoản đầu tư bất động sản thông qua công ty cá nhân mang tên Cascade. Ông sở hữu cổ phần lớn tại khách sạn Charles Hotel (Cambridge, Massachusetts). Ông cũng sở hữu gần một nửa cổ phần trong chuỗi khách sạn của Four Season Holding.
Năm 2013, Gates cùng vài người mua lại khách sạn Ritz-Carlton ở San Francisco với giá 161 triệu USD. Năm 2014, tài sản này đã có giá 200 triệu USD.

Còn khi không bận rộn làm việc, Gates đi nghỉ cùng gia đình. Gates rất thích đến Australia, Belize, Croatia và rừng Amazon ở Brazil. Ông từng thuê trọn chiếc siêu du thuyền Serene với giá 5 triệu USD trong một tuần, bao gồm một trực thăng, để cả gia đình nghỉ mát ở Địa Trung Hải.
